ART GRADUATE PROGRAM - Art Education Emphasis

There are two graduate Art Education programs. The Single Subject Credential Program in Art prepares students to teach art at the middle school and high school levels. The Master's Program in Art Education offers students an MA in Art with an Art Education concentration. Many students choose to combine the Credential Program with the Master's Program.

 

MASTERS OF ARTS (ART EDUCATION) PROGRAM

• Art Education Graduate Program at CSUN

The Master of Arts in Art Education program has produced a number of successful graduates; some whom have went on to complete either M.F.A (studio art), or Ph.D. (art education) degrees. Many of our Masters graduates are art teachers in Los Angeles area school districts, and are leaders in their schools as well as in the California State Art Education Association, conducting professional development for others at both local and state levels.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

All initial graduate degree candidates seeking the Master of Arts in Art Education enter the program as unclassified graduate students. To become classified, students must pass evaluation of student portfolio, the University Writing Proficiency Exam, and achieve a grade of B or better in Art 590, History and Philosophy of Art Education.

 

• Art Education Graduate Portfolio Review

Incoming students to the Master of Arts in Art Education program undergo a portfolio evaluation required for entry; portfolio review usually occurs on or before students have completed 12 units of study in art education. Portfolios are assessed for the following: evidence of graduate level writing proficiency and research skills; and, evidence of proficiency in an undergraduate or post-graduate area of expertise. These areas might be one of the following: Studio Art, Museum Studies, Art History, Arts Education, or another area of study related to Art Education.

Masters of Arts in Art Education candidates also must show evidence of a clear understanding of the discipline-based skills, concepts and ideas relating to The Visual and Performing Arts Framework for California Public Schools, K-12, and the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, Prekindergarten Through Grade Twelve.

Students may include graded research papers, original signed work, slides, and/or other relevant materials, such as curriculum work, that best display these areas of expertise. Students must also include with their portfolio a written Statement of Intent.

 

• Art Education Masters Thesis

Terminal graduate degree candidates undergo a cumulative series of reviews, including a review of the thesis proposal and ongoing review of thesis development, leading to review and acceptance of their final masters thesis.

The Masters of Arts in Art Education students write a thesis, or a written thesis in conjunction with a thesis exhibition. The master’s thesis identified on a student’s program is the culminating academic experience leading to an advanced degree. A master’s thesis is based on the results of original research that substantiates a specific view as expressed in a hypothesis, a concept, or a question. A master’s thesis provides a demonstration of a graduate student’s ability to explore, develop, and organize materials relating to a specific problem or an applied orientation within a field of study. The student must exhibit an ability to pursue research and investigation in a rigorous and perceptive fashion, and to present the results in an extended scholarly statement in a clear, direct, and concise manner. The university shelves a copy in the archive. This allows the work to be publicly available to other students, faculty, and outside researchers. The thesis or the graduate project, therefore, becomes a visible and permanent measure of the quality of scholarship expected of a graduate student.

The Master in Arts in Art Education as listed in the University Catalog is a minimum of 30 units, maintenance of a 3.0 GPA, and 18 units or more of 500 and 600 level courses, which involves the following course and unit requirements:

  consultation with art education faculty and advisors.
